Safety is a top priority for Canada’s petroleum product refining industry. Over the years demand for petroleum products has soared, and since 2001, the number of hours worked in a typical refinery has increased by 40 percent. Even with increased production, 2005 marked the lowest accident rate in the history of Canadian refineries.
As an industry, we have a responsibility to keep our facilities reliable, prevent accidents and, above all, inform the public of our activities and associated risks. We maintain an open dialogue with community residents and stakeholders.
Listening, mutual respect, a willingness to compromise and adaptability are all essential for successful community relations. We listen to community concerns and address them while sharing information about our industrial activities.
